Eric Martin - Head Golf Professional
I have had many people say they are unhappy with their careers and wished they had chosen a career that they were passionate about. I did just that and have been extremely happy with all aspects of being the Head Golf Professional at Lakelands Golf & CC. Golf has been a part of my life since I was 12 years old when my Dad used to let me caddy for him in his golf league. Well, it has been 40 plus years since then and I still love getting up and coming to the golf course each and every day. The career choice took a while but what a good decision. After graduating from Michigan State University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business I spent a couple of years in the banking industry and then 2 years in the restaurant business before I finally asked myself, “What if I would of taken golf seriously?’ I made the decision to give up the company car and take an Assistant Golf Professional position at the course I grew up at for minimum wage and long hours and my career choice was made. From that first year at Currie Municipal Golf Course, in Midland, MI, my career stops along the way have included 8 years at Dama Farms Golf Course, in Howell, MI and 8 years at Chemung Hills Country Club, in Howell, MI.
Lakelands Golf & CC gave me the opportunity to continue my love of the game when I was hired in 2003 to be the Head Golf Professional and create an experience for the membership that would exceed their expectation. The position has many hats and I love wearing them all from Junior Golf mentor, tournament director, expert merchandiser, rules authority, golf shop operator, trained instructor, outing director, accomplished player, tireless promoter of the game, and many more.
The Professional Golf Association of America has given me the tools to provide me with a career I have truly enjoyed and the opportunity to grow this game, teach this game, and hopefully pass this game on to anyone who lets their life touch it.
